Knysna (pronounced Naizna) is a family owned and operated café in Paraparaumu, established in 2021 by husband and wife team Andrew and Tanya. Having owned a successful restaurant in South Africa for over fifteen years, they finally took the leap of faith and opened something of their own here in New Zealand.

Knysna Café and Bar offers delicious light breakfasts and lunches as well as some delectable dinner time options. Our authentic South African milktarts, malva puddings and peppermint crisp tarts are handmade by Tanya. And… let’s not forget the mouth-watering Dom Pedro's and Italian roasted coffees.

The menu boasts some kiwi classics as well as a few South African favorites. We pride ourselves in the quality and freshness of our meals and because we also pride ourselves on contributing to our community, we are committed to using as much local produce as possible.

We hope that our food will make everyone’s day a little bit better and we’re always up for a bit of friendly banter with our resident customers. We’ve come to know so many of you by name and have come to love the daily inflow of familiar faces. It’s a place we like to call home, a place where you’re always made to feel welcome and a place were good friends meet!

Had lunch here, breakfast menu till 2pm, then lots of choice burgers, pasta, larger meals just loved the food, very yummy, lots to choose from but not too much (some cafes have too much choice!) service was awesome, cant wait to come here in summer to sit in outdoor area for a cool drink. In fact would love to come back for dinner.

We will be back. So glad this café has opened and hope to see us locals supporting this

Something for everyone. Very well priced as well. Thank you Knysna! Will return many times as this is now our new favorite place in Kapiti!

The ‘silver fern’ in te reo Māori – is a species of tree fern only found in New Zealand.
This distinctly New Zealand symbol is considered a badge of honour by the people, products and services of the country that carry it. According to Māori legend, the silver fern once lived in the sea. It was asked to come and live in the forest to guide the Māori people. The hunters and warriors used the silver underside of the fern leaves to find their way home. When bent over, the fronds would catch the moonlight and shine a path through the forest.

The ancient fern has a history rich in symbolism often symbolizing eternal youth. To the indigenous Maori people of New Zealand, the fern represented new life and new beginnings.

And that's how Knysna came to be, the name was the perfect fit to represent both their home country of South Africa as well as their new life here in New Zealand.

our name

Andrew and Tanya wanted a name that represented their heritage, a way of sharing their culture, but also something that represents their new life here in New Zealand.

The word Knysna (pronounced Naizna) stems from the Khoisan language, which means “ferns” or "fern leaves" and is named after a small coastal town along the picturesque Garden Route of Cape Town, South Africa.
It's also a very popular holiday destination and a place Andrew and Tanya hold near and dear.
